Wheat Belly by William Davis, M.D. is holding steady in the Amazon Top 100 books as more and more overweight people look for the answer to their gradual weight gain over the last few decades, and their failed attempts to lose weight after many repeated effords. Currently, Wheat Belly is at number 55 on Amazon for all books, and number one in the subcategories of Gluten Free Diets and Weight Loss. Amazon shows 2,527 reviews, 1,649 positive with 5 stars. The book was also a NY Times Bestseller for several weeks in 2011.
Is it just another fad diet?
Davis, a cardiologist, originally developed the eating plan for his diabetic patients when he realized that two pieces of whole wheat bread had worse effects on blood sugar than a Snickers bar. Although very scientific and technical, this book explains a lot about why America is so fat. From the issue of Dwarf Wheat, to the fact that wheat is in almost all commercially processed foods, and the explanation that gluten-free products are now worse than the regular versions from an ingredient standpoint, it can be a little overwhelming. Dr. Davis wants readers to know why the diet was developed and why it works for so many, so much if the information in the first few chapters is very clinical. He gives many case studies and sample recipes to help the novice get started.
What is a wheat-free diet?
Wheat-free is not the same as gluten-free, although they are often confused. Dr. Davis encourages eating a totally clean diet - eliminating all grains, HFCS, nitrates and nitrates, and of course sugar. His philosophy is that grains in general are unhealthy, and there is a lengthy explanation of how GMOs play into what's happening to the American food supply. Davis advocates eating a diet rich in fresh vegetables, meats without nitrates or nitrites, hard cheeses (no yogurt which is often laden with chemicals and corn syrup), eggs, fruit, nuts, and seeds. The wheat-free, grain-free lifestyle is very similar to a Paleo Diet.
Does it really work?
According to over 1,600 Amazon reviewers and thousands more on the official Wheat Belly Facebook group, yes. It does take time and practice to remove wheat and grains from the Standard American Diet. Many who have followed the plan have reported amazing health changes like asthma going away, arthritis going away, IBS getting better, rashes clearing up, and of course weight loss over a period of several months of being loyal to a wheat-free and sometimes grain-free plan.
