With his right hand, Barack Obama has made sure through his lackeys in the mainstream media that Syria is the topic of national discussion. Photos of Syrians whose lives have been snuffed out with chemical weapons dominate the headlines. Obama and his Secretary of State John Kerry, who was a dove before he joined the administration, now demand that the United States take military action against Syria, even if they have to go it alone. Congress has objected, with many if not most Democrats exhibiting a stark reluctance to launch such military strikes, creating a grand Congressional debate that will claim the nation's attention for another two weeks.
But what is Obama doing with his left hand? The answer is key.
As a president who is controlled almost entirely by political operatives, Americans can rest assured that decisions Obama makes are carefully crafted and calculated with a purely political goal in mind.
Thus, the real issue at hand is never what the president does publicly for all to see with his right hand. The real issue is what he is doing with his left hand, which is carefully hidden from public view. While the attention of the news media and citizens is focused on the right hand, the left hand is where the real action is.
What, then, has Obama been doing with that infamous left hand? The clues abound.
Notice what we no longer see on the nightly news broadcasts, newspaper headlines, and Internet news sites. The thing that is curiously missing tells a most powerful story.
No more do we see nightly stories on the IRS scandal. Nothing is being reported about the ongoing Benghazi investigation. Gone are the endless daily investigative reports on the NSA spying program, which proved that the U.S. government broke the law, violated numerous Constitutional rights of citizens, and monitored the statements, movements, and behaviors of over 100 million adult citizens without court warrants and without court permission.
And the NSA admitted to all of this. So far, however, nothing had been done by Congress or the Supreme Court, or any government entity to bring the criminal perpetrators to justice.
These facts are bad enough, so bad in fact that Obama's handlers had to make sure that each of these scandals were obliterated from the public consciousness, entirely removed from public view. Veteran politicos know that the best way to accomplish this task is to refocus the public, and the media, elsewhere. By threatening to go to war with Syria, Obama has done exactly that.
But make no mistake, this tactic is but a foreshadowing of the days to come as the nation heads into the 2014 midterm elections. Obama must not only get the focus off of the scandals involving Benghazi, the IRS, and the NSA, but he must refocus the public's attention on an issue that is more likely to help Democratic candidates around the country as they seek to take back the U.S. House of Representatives and increase their majority in the U.S. Senate.
If somehow the Obama political machine can keep the public's attention on the Middle East and similar issues, their chances of avoiding being entirely shellacked during the midterm elections are greatly enhanced.
Even if many Democrats break with Obama and some of their colleagues in the Party who support him, the Democrats stand to gain. They can go back to their constituents and claim they oppose the president when they think he is wrong. They can bolster their reputations in states and districts that are solidly blue and that invariably express deep disdain for any military action of any kind.
Obama himself has nothing to lose. He is already a lame duck who can never be reelected. But if he can help fellow Democrats make inroads in Congress, then sacrificing a bit of support from members of his own Party, albeit in public, will be a small price to pay. He will have fulfilled what he himself has stated is his number one goal -- to reclaim the Congress for the Democratic Party.
