Steven Spielberg is mostly known for light hearted fare, but occasionally he has veered into the darker side of life. One example would to be one of his later films Munich, where a hidden bomb causes telephone booth to explode. That is the closest thing Spielberg has ever had to depicting a real life murder in one of his films. Unless you count the more fantastical terrors seen in his earlier films, such as Duel, the early ABC Movie of The Week he directed for television in 1971. Of course, there are also his more well-known hits Jaws and Jurassic Park. All involve imaginary or over the top villains who antagonize the main characters in each film.
But what about Spielberg depicting a real life terror in one of his films, the kind that enters your house in the middle of the night and makes you realize you are unsafe in your very own home. Although he has sort of produced a film with a similar theme in Poltergeist, but instead of focusing on the supernatural, why not explore the real the nice man next door or the pleasant old guy across the street can cause. Although he did produce a trendy and hip version of this very concept with the Shia Lebeouf film Disturbia. A film that did work for its intended purpose and audience, but the long run did not hold much water with the general public at large.
While many would probably feel that Spielberg will never produce or direct a true serial killer film, one truly never knows. He may in fact take everyone by surprise. After the success of the aforementioned JAWS, Close Encounters of The Kind, E.T., and the Indiana Jones films, no one in their right mind would have thought he would have ever made The Color Purple, Empire of The Sun, and Schindler’s List. Just when everyone has Steven Spielberg figured out, he comes out with a film (whether as director or producer) that is completely out of left field.
