We’ve all been there: A sudden urge to go overcomes you and a public restroom is your only option. But where to put your loaded pistol? Most of us place our weapons on the top of the tank, the business end of the gun pointed at the wall. However, what if a firefight breaks out in the bathroom, and you have to awkwardly reach around behind you to defend yourself? That’s a risk many of us simply aren’t willing to take. Instead, you place your weapon on top of the toilet paper dispenser for a quick draw in the likely event that it becomes necessary to use lethal force inside the restroom of a fast food restaurant.
Despite all this seemingly sound logic, things can go awry, as a Kentucky man learned this Sunday when the loaded pistol he brought into the bathroom of a Fazoli’s slipped off of the TP dispenser and shot him in the leg. The man was rushed to an Elizabethtown-area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
At this point, you may be thinking, “Yeah, right, likely story. This dude was probably injured thwarting a terrorist, who shot him in the leg before this guy choked him out, stuffed him in the bathroom supplies closet, and waited for the covert cleanup crew to pick up the body, before coming up with a cover story as to not reveal his status as Kentucky’s finest Top Secret agent.” And while that does indeed seem highly plausible, Elizabethtown Police Sgt. David Neary said that evidence, including the bullet’s trajectory, are consistent with the man’s version of the events. In which case, this appears to be a simple accident that could have happened to any of us who bring loaded weapons into bathrooms at Italian fast food restaurants.
After all, police said the man had a concealed carry permit, so he was obviously trained on how to properly handle a firearm.
