With Christmas just around the corner, Austin music fans might assume there is not much going on in the "live music capital" this weekend. They may be surprised to learn there are plenty of shows happening. Psychobilly pioneer, Reverend Horton Heat will be at Emo's with Dale Watson and Two Tons of Steel. At nearby Antone's Mingo Fishtrap and Hard Proof Afrobeat will get the dance party going. If you still have last minute gifts to buy, you can do it with a full bar and live music at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. Austin DJ collective, Peligrosa will celebrate their sixth anniversary by inducting DJ Manny at Empire Control Room. There are tons of shows coming for New Year's Eve and Free Week which will be detailed later. Below you can find information about our recommendations for this weekend.

Reverend Horton Heat w/ Dale Watson and Two Tons of Steel - Emo's - Doors 9 p.m. Music 10 p.m. - $20

Reverend Horton Heat has been at the forefront of psychobilly since the early 90's. Along with The Cramps, the threesome has pioneered the fusion of psych rock and rockabilly which features loud, distorted guitars, raunchy lyrics and a devil-may-care attitude. Years of constant touring have turned the act into a live music favorite for concertgoers across the country for over 20 years. The group is touring in support of their latest album, "REV" which will be released January 21. Add Austin's Dale Watson who appeared on the David Letterman Show this year and Two Tons of Steel and you have a lineup that is pretty tough to beat this weekend. Tickets are still available from the Emo's website.

Mingo Fishtrap w/ Hard Proof Afrobeat - Antone's - 9 p.m. - $10

It may be a bit strange to list the opener for this show in the headline, but readers of this column already know how much we like Hard Proof. This group of ten talented, local musicians play their own brand of Fela Kuti-inspired Afrobeat with a generous dose of funk and jazz that gets audiences dancing every show they play. The group recently put out a vinyl release, "Dragon" on Kept Records and gets regular radio play at KUTX. This is the last show of the year in Austin for this group. Since Antone's just sold and may be moving back downtown, it may also be the only time to see Hard Proof at the venue's East Riverside location. Get advance tickets from Antone's Ticket Fly page.
