For the last decade the Washington State Wine Commission has been shining a spotlight on restaurants which excel at promoting the virtues of Washington wine to their customers. This year was no exception as hundreds of wine enthusiasts and industry leaders gathered for a tasting featuring more than 50 Washington vintners before the commission's Washington State Wine Awards were dispensed last evening at McCaw Hall.
Thomas Price of Metropolitan Grill got the nod for Sommelier of the Year, Copperleaf Restaurant was named Best Independent Restaurant of the Year, Mackay (El Gaucho) was acknowledged as the Best Restaurant Group and Urbane Seattle was celebrated for producing the Best Event Featuring Washington Wine.
This year the commission expanded its awards program to celebrate retailers who go above and beyond to get a myriad of Washington wines into their customer’s hands as well. Metropolitan Market grocery group was named Retailer of the Year and Wine World and Spirits was awarded with the title Best Independent Retailer of the Year for their innovative efforts to educate consumers about the quality and diversity of wines produced in Washington State.
