If you've been getting that vibe that the guys just don't seem to be in the same league as the girls on this year's "American Idol," you are not along. Professional oddsmakers are feeling the same vibe. In fact, they're feeling it so strong that half of the girls among the 20 remaining contestants have the best odds of winning the next title.
To make things worse for the guys, according to the professional oddsmaker website Bovada.com on their posted odds on Monday, March 3 (the day before the Top 20 are scheduled to perform in Las Vegas), the girls place six in the Top 9 and eight in the Top 11 (due to a tie in the odds). The girls also place their other two in the bottom three (bottom two if you consider that there is a two-way tie for worst odds to win).
The guy with the best odds to win? The guy that made Judge Mariah Carey cry -- Burnell Taylor. He tied for fifth best with Amber Holcomb at 14/1 odds to be the next Idol.
It's not looking good for a sixth straight WGWG on "Idol" going into the first round that takes the decision-making out of the judges hands. In the upcoming round, the viewers will choose who moves forward and who goes home.
The worst odds? Zoanette Johnson and Charlie Askew, of course. They're both so over-the-top eccentric that oddsmakers aren't holding out much hope for them. Their odds to win: 40/1.
So who looks like a winner for Season 12? The inestimable Angela Miller, who so impressed the judges with a song of her own composition, "Your Set Me Free," for the Solo Round of Hollywood Week to make the Top 40 that the judges acted as if they didn't care about her subsequent performance and simply put her in the Top 20. Miller's odds? 7/2.
Her nearest competitor is Kree Harrison (4/1), followed by Aubrey Cleland (11/2) and Janelle Arthur (6/1).
Of course, these are just odds to win. They are a likelihood of finishing on top. Even those with horrible odds still have a chance to win, even if the oddsmakers find those chances overly slim.
But dark horses and cinderellas rise sometimes (see Taylor Hicks in Season 5 and Kris Allen in Season 8) and those that seemed most likely to win fall (see Chris Daughtry during Season 5, Adam Lambert during Season 8, Clay Aiken during Season 2, and Pia Toscano during Season 11).
"American Idol" will air an extra show for the Top 20, the first shows where the viewers will vote for their favorites. Instead of just the usual Wednesday and Thursday slots, Tuesday was added. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the guys and girls will sing. On Thursday, the Top 10 will be revealed.
All shows will begin at 8 p.m. (EST) on Fox Television.
