In spite of the snow, Times Square yesterday was a flurry of activity. The weather didn't stop knitters from attending Vogue Knitting Live at the NYC Marriott Marquis. The knitting crowd continues to be predominantly women and they do know how to shop and browse the Marketplace. This three day event also included lectures and classes/workshops, along with fashion shows, Vogue Knitting sample sale, free demonstrations, yoga classes for knitters, book signings...
What is the same? What is new? What is different? Color and fiber were everywhere. Radiant Orchid is the Pantone color of 2014. What happened to lace? It was almost non-existent. The sample projects were of the 'immediate kind'. Small projects, from one skein to three. What was big was chunky yarn. The show was all about fast, easy with the great results. Cowls, shrugs and scarves are what's popular.
I sat in on Clara Parkes lecture, "The Great White Bale, an adventure in making yarn". The bale is 676 pounds of Merino fleece. Clara spoke of the journey that she and the fiber went through. You heard a bit about the people she met and the places she visited and saw the manufacturing process of yarn. Clara was a wonderful lecturer. Her love of fiber and storeytelling came through easily. Read about her latest book, "The Yarn Whisperer".
VK Live is a show of fun, fiber and education. Make sure to attend when it comes to your area. Or jump in the car with some girlfriends and go for a 'knitting road trip'.
