The husband-and-wife duo of Treysara (bassist Trey and singer Sara Thompson) joins Honolulu Jazz Quartet’s pianist Dan Del Negro and drummer von Baron tomorrow for Sarento’s Thursday jazz night in Waikiki. They bring with them, from Kauai, an intimate, classic jazz feel to all their tunes—be it standard or an original composition.
Treysara are regular fixtures for Sunday Afternoon Jazz Jam (4 p.m.-7 p.m.) at the Kauai St. Regis Princeville resort’s bar, along with Rick Avallone, Tony Rodarate, and sometimes, special national guest stars. They’ve both worked with big names in their careers, Trey as a session/touring musician, Sara as a songwriter.
Originally out of L.A., Trey Thompson has worked on recordings or live performances with artists like Larry Carlton, David Foster, Michael McDonald, and Mike Post (Hill Street Blues, Magnum P.I., etc.). Thompson’s wife Sara is known for songs that capture the fragility and strength of human emotion. She’s helped many singers reach the stars with her versatile, diverse songwriting styles. Her song, “If Angels Weep,” co-written with Trey, earned a Kauai Music Songwriters Festival award. Her songwriting skills were put to the test in Treysara’s 2009 jazz-bop-standards CD, “Behind The Moon.”
“Behind The Moon” offers jazz standards and contemporary tunes written by or admired by the musical couple: “Stella By Starlight,” “April In Paris,” “Israel,” “How You?”
They’ll probably perform a few tracks from their CD, along with some well-known standards, at the Sarento’s gig. Just ask.
