Call it a classic case of political correctness run amok. Citing safety concerns, Sneakers Bistro, a restaurant based in Winooski, Vermont, removed a sign that read, “Yield Sneakers Bacon,” reported Saturday. According to Breitbart, the sign was taken down after a Muslim woman complained.

An online post by the woman said the sign was insensitive to those who do not consume pork. She also said that as a Muslim, she was personally offended.

Restaurant owners told WPTZ they reached out to the woman. Not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings, they removed the sign, saying they regret any harm the sign may have caused, and they never intended to cause stress or bad feelings.

“We are here to serve people BREAKFAST, not politics," restaurant owners said on Facebook. "We removed the sign that was located on public property as a gesture of respect for our diverse community. There were also concerns raised about safety. Removing it was not a difficult decision. We still love bacon. We still love eggs. Please have the political conversation elsewhere.”

"It's nice that they were respectful enough to take it down," area resident Caleb Wiley said. "But I also think they shouldn't have, or had to at any right."

Others agreed, WPTZ said. While discussing the situation online, one person said the word "bacon" is not offensive because it simply describes food.

Winooski City Manager Katherine "Deac" Decarreau weighed in, saying the "cool part of living in a diverse community is that it's not always comfortable. It's a fascinating place with lots of opportunities for conversation. The City has to pay attention to a lot of factors while acting within what we can regulate."

On Sunday, a Facebook page asked supporters to tell the restaurant how they feel about the decision. One person called Sneakers "spineless" and said she would not visit the restaurant "until you undo your silliness."

Twitter users have also weighed in, heavily criticizing the bistro. A few of those tweets can be seen here.

Breitbart said a representative from the restaurant was not available for comment. WPTZ said the Winooski Islamic Community Center also was not available.
