Updates on death row dogs, a $1,000 prize winner, a fire and more

Over the long Thanksgiving day holiday, publishing was limited, but it did not come to a screeching halt.

For those who were enjoying much needed down time, away from electronic "devices," the following is a brief overview to help catch you up.

On the morning of Thanksgiving Day, the winner of the Thanksgiving Day $1,000 donation was announced. Congratulations to NMDOG! Click here to read the full story.

Later that same day came the sad announcement that Elwood, the 2007 winner of the "Ugliest Dog Contest," died. Click here to read the story.

On a lighter, more upbeat note, came the story of Katara, a senior German shepherd who was depressed and without hope behind the bars of the Lancaster Animal Care and Control facility, and her rescue. Click here to read the full story.

Next, the heartwarming update about the senior Chihuahua named "Baby," who narrowly skirted death at the Baldwin Park Animal Control. Click here to read about her last minute reprieve.

The day after Thanksgiving, the story about the heroic Newfoundland, named "Nero," who disappeared after saving his family from a deadly house fire, was published. Click here to read the story.

Also on Nov. 29 was the publication of the story about a Walnut Creek, Calif., man who managed to skirt jail time after stabbing his German shepherd puppy to death with a hunting knife. Click here to read the story.

On Nov. 30 came a much anticipated update on the young, Neapolitan Mastiff named "Bubbles," including new photos of her reconstructed face following her surgery. Click here for the story.

Also on Nov. 30 was the publication of an article about a high kill animal control in South Carolina where two out of every three dogs that come in do not make it out alive. Click here to read more.

On Dec. 1, an article about a deadly fire at a Kentucky animal shelter was published. The shelter mascot, "Sassy," perished in the blaze. Click here to read more.
