As studios continue to branch out and develop new experiences and new franchises, it's natural that they take parts from existing brands and place them into new ones. Well, for Naughty Dog, it's the other way around.
The Last of Us introduced gamers to unique stealth elements that were not present in the Uncharted franchise, and they plan to take those aspects and bring them into Uncharted 4. Uncharted 4 Technical Art Director Waylon Brinck spoke about how the foes players will face are smarter and the stealth elements The Last of Us featured are also in the fourth.
"The enemies are smarter. We've taken a lot of the stealth elements from The Last of Us and brought them in so the player has more choices in combat. You can actually avoid an enemy, lose their line of sight and just sneak past them, and not even have to encounter them," Brinck said.
AI seems to be far more precise and realistic from the sense of how they can visualize a player's movements, and how they cannot. Uncharted 4 seems like it will feature the most reactive and precise AI yet.
Some games can enable players to fall into their predictable patterns and it isn't going to be the same in Uncharted 4. Uncharted 4 Lead Animator Jeremy Yates spoke about how the game doesn't want players to sit on their laurels and wait for action to come to them, and how the game will force them to innovate their play styles.
"We didn't want a game where you sit behind one piece of cove and sit there with the 'stop and pop,' you're shooting. We really want you to move through the environment, to outsmart them, to flank them, for them to be able to chase you around and just have that constant motion," Yates said.
