Were there UFOs over Toronto this weekend? According to a few who got video and photographic evidence of a mysterious light that appeared to be hovering over the city, there seemed to be something strange in the Canadian sky Saturday night. And they very well could have been UFOs. Some were even prompted to call the police.
CTV News reported July 27 that Toronto residents viewed something odd in the sky and took to social media with photos and videos and lively speculation as to what the luminous phenomena might be. The police received a number of calls about the lights, including a somewhat stationary light and a stream of blinking pink, green and white lights as well.
Speculation proffered kites, Chinese lanterns, drones and, of course, UFOs...
But the common denominator amongst the speculation and the police reports was the question: What is it? (Or, what are they?)
A video of the lights landed on YouTube Saturday, posted by Sarah Chun, who wrote: "A really bright orbital object...glowing!" The video has gathered nearly 600,000 views as of this story's posting since Saturday night.
Chun later told the Toronto Star: “It was really high up, and was round, bright, and shining. At first I thought it was stars or something, but it was too bright to be. I didn’t know what it was.”
She noted that the light hovered for about 25 minutes or so before it "kind of flew," then disappeared.
Sarah Chun actually posted two videos of the UFO over Toronto.
Another Toronto resident, Sebastian Setien, reorded the lights on his Blackberry cell phone. He said he knew he wasn't seeing things three years ago when he saw lights, but this time he recorded it.
“I thought it was a weather probe or a drone," he told the Star. "Then at night time we come back out to have a beer on the balcony and then we see these lights.”
Another North York resident said he witnessed kids launching a kite in the park that had a string of lights for a tail. A couple hours later he saw what appeared to be a line of lights. He told CTV via email, "(It) looked like a very potent laser pointing vertical to the sky, but it was the kite these people were preparing."
Toronto Police confirmed they received several UFO reports Saturday night in the North York area.
“Somebody did see something in the sky, but what it was we don’t know,” said Sgt. Barry White of 32 Division. “It might have been someone playing with one of those remote control helicopters from one of the condos.”
The first calls to police started at around 7 p.m. and continued until 10 p.m. The last few calls included reports by police officers themselves. White said that officers questioned people on the street about the sightings as well but he admitted that the department didn't really have a protocol for UFO sightings.
He doubted any investigation into the matter was in the offing: “If it was something dangerous and we could do something under the criminal code, we might. Police would go try and check it out. But to actually go and investigate it further as a UFO — I don’t think we would. I’m trying not to laugh!”
White said it was Saturday's was the first UFO sighting call of his 15-year-career.
