As “one of my own” stood proudly on shore, the gigantic U.S.S Nimitz (CVN 68) powered down and sidled up to her home port of Everett, Wash., docking in just before noon today.
The last nine-month deployment for the aircraft carrier was not just a Mediterranean Sea cruise, although there was an element of that involved; Nimitz and her crew saw action in the Afghanistan War, deploying some 1,400 combat sorties from the massive decks of one of the world’s largest warships.
Nuclear-powered, Nimitz traveled some 80,000 nautical miles this tour and also performed joint military operations with NATO allies.
Named after WWII Pacific Fleet Commander Chester Nimitz, CVN-68 has been home-ported at Naval Station Everett since 2012.
