Top 35 programs of 2012: #16 American surprise (Photos)

Ross Miner USA
2012 NHK Trophy free skate

As far as the American men are concerned, this is the program of the season so far. After Ross Miner had issues in the short program to start the competition, his podium chances seemed slim to none. But he played catchup in a big way to win the bronze – thanks to free skate mistakes from Javier Fernandez and this brilliant free skate.

With the long term in mind, Miner has been attempting the quad sal in both the short and the free skate all season. It took six programs, but he finally was successful with it here. He added seven clean triples after that quad. This free skate was clearly the best program of his career so far, and for me, the highlight in the men’s event at NHK.

Among the American men, Miner is generally the unassuming one – but with two bronze medals at Nationals in the past two years, you know he’s got his sights set on moving up this season, and getting back on the World team.
