Thompson wins World Cup skl cross title

According to the Canadian Press, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Marielle Thompson of Vancouver, British Columbia won the 2013-14 World Cup title in women's ski cross on Sunday.

Thompson won a World Cup competition in La Plagne, France. Fanny Smith of Switzerland finshed in second place on Sunday, while another Canadian, Georgia Simmerling, also of Vancouver, placed third.

For Simmerling it was her second straight podium finish as she also won a bronze medal in Are, Sweden on March 16.

Thompson had 755 total points in the World Cup season to win the prestigious crystal globe. Smith was second with 730 points followed by Ophelie David of France with 572 points.

At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Thompson became the second Canadian in two Olympic Winter Games to win an Olympic gold medal in women's ski cross. She was followed by Ashleigh McIvor of Vancouver, who dominated the pack at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.
