The Irvine International Film Festival will open on Jan 12 at Edwards Westpark8, one of the few theatres that usually shows independent and foreign films. The Film Festival will feature the Art of Independent Film Making, by showing films from around the world, documentries, live action shorts, and animated films. Some of them are on the short list of potential Oscar nominations.
The founders of the festival - Jack Kaprielian and Kevin Derek are residents of Orange County, and hope the festival will draw attention to films with unique points of view, not usually found in standard films.
Among the line-up is "Empty Hand" the real karate kid - a documentary about martial arts students from Mission Viejo, and how they cope with a rigourous sports program and being a teenager in America. The documentary was filmed in Orange County.
Another focuses on the life of a "silent screen actress" - Carla Laemmle. The 102 year old silent screen star will attend the Film "Among the Rugged Peaks", which is about her life.
The festival will also screen films by local K-12 students. On Saturday the 14th, five talented elementary students will have the thrill of seeing their work on the big screen.
