The Summer Place SF: Fantastic dive bar with fireplace

Slightly blurry photo by Laila

The Summer Place is this really super duper late 70's-style bar on Bush and Mason. It's dim and divey and has a jukebox filled with classic and 90's rock that might be overplayed but, still, sets the mood perfectly.

What's nice about this place is that there is no noticeable feeling of pretense, obvious dress code, or coolness requirement. There's just a bunch of fairly young regulars playing cards, neighborhood locals having a post-work/pre-party drink, and whoever else happens to stumble upon The Summer Places's dingy doorstep and realize that it's worth going inside and staying for awhile.

Of course, the best part about The Summer Place place is that there is a little gas fireplace surrounded by low tables and chairs good for lamenting, cuddling, sulking, or relaxing in. Although I can name a few, fireplaces in dive bars are hard to come by in SF. And I think there's something to be said for staring at a fire while nursing a glass of whiskey or downing a pint of beer. A fireplace is a good distraction during an awkward date (just look at the flames until one of you either makes a move or disappears), a romantic night (by yourself or with someone else), or bonding with friends (you feel like you're sitting around a campfire and, therefore, shared stories are somehow more meaningful).

The Summer Place sits at 801 Bush St, San Francisco, CA 94108, (415) 441-2252
