It’s been a tough week for Jeff Probst, host of “The Jeff Probst Show” and the latest “Survivor” series called “Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites.” On Feb. 14, TV By the Numbers revealed that “Survivor” premiered on Wednesday to its lowest ratings ever. This comes just one day after CBS announced that “The Jeff Probst Show” would not be returning after its freshman season. On Wednesday, Probst responded, “I’m super bummed, but extremely proud. The truth is all shows come to an end. Ours just ended a decade sooner than we hoped.”
“Survivor” returned for its 26th season on Wednesday night with the premiere of “Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites.” The contestants were divided into two teams: fans of the show against past favorite competitors. Since debuting in 1992, “Survivor” has tried to revamp the series by adding hidden immunity idols, Redemption Island for a second shot to get back into the game, and Exile Island to make life even more miserable for the castaways. Over the course of two decades, “Survivor” has won six Emmy Awards, 21 assorted other awards and 63 various nominations.
Wednesday night’s premiere of “Caramoan: Fans vs. Favorites” pulled in 2.4 million adults 18-49, down substantially from last spring’s 3.1 rating for “One World.” This was a new low for a “Survivor” premiere. Is “Survivor’s” days numbered and has the reality show run its course? For four years, Jeff Probst dominated the Emmy Awards, winning Best Reality-Competition Host every year since its inception in 2008. However, he wasn’t even nominated in 2012.
The bad ratings announcement comes just one day after CBS announced the cancellation of “The Jeff Probst Show.” His new talk show premiered on Sept. 10 and Probst focused on family dynamics, relationships and news of the day. Concerning his double duty, Probst said in September, “I’m fascinated with people and I love adventure. I can’t wait to bring these two worlds together in daytime.”
So, fans will now be able to catch Jeff Probst in action only in prime time on “Survivor.” In addition to low ratings, “Survivor” is just not getting the buzz it once did. The new season's Facebook page, has only 109 fans as of Feb. 14 and it has very few favorable posts. Like “The Jeff Probst Show,” could "Survivor's" end be near? Only time and ratings will tell if or when its torch gets snuffed one last time.
