The benefits of fish oil supplements

No doubt you have heard that you should eat 1 or 2 meals of fish per week to get Omega 3 fatty acids.  The benefits of taking fish oil are touted over and over, but do you really know why you need Omega 3’s?  There have been numerous studies done in many different areas to see what the advantages of fish oil are.  With all the studies done, the question is, should you take fish oil supplements?  The answer is yes.

Scientists at the University of Montreal have just finished a study on fish oil and it’s effect on depression.  The study revealed that moderately depressed patients taking 1200 mg of omega 3’s per day had a significant improvement in their depression.  The studies showed that the omega 3’s improve the function of chemicals in the brain that reduced depression.

Another recent study at Harvard Medical School showed that the body converts omega 3 fatty acids into compounds that protect your joints.  Compounds called resolvins become 10,000 times stronger and more effective than the original omega 3’s.

Fish oil has also been shown in several studies to aid in weight loss.  Your body will use the omega 3’s as energy right away, and will fight against your body storing the bad omega 6 fatty acids as fat.

Heart health is a major concern to most people.  Other studies have shown that omega 3’s help lower tryglycerides.  The studies also showed that lowering tryglycerides was the key to lowering cholesterol.

At Johns Hopkins School of Medicine study has shown that fish oil given to patients with normal and high blood pressure showed significant reduction in the systolic and diastolic blood pressure of both groups.

All of the studies that have been published show that the benefits of fish oil on many different functions in the body show significant benefit to supplementing your diet with omega 3 fatty acids.  If you are still not convinced, talk to your doctor and read this article about more benefits and reasons to supplement.
