HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Friday July 25, 2014): The 2014 Vans US Open of Surfing is set to kick-off nine days of impeccable surfing at the historic Huntington Beach Pier. Surf City USA is celebrating 100 years of surfing in style alongside the 2014 Vans US Open of Surfing. The marathon-like event, which also includes bicycle motocross (BMX) and skateboarding in addition to surfing, will run July 26th through August 3rd. This year, the Vans US Open boasts a family friendly atmosphere. In addition to the fun-filled, family-vibe surf contest known as the Vans Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational presented by Pacifico, there will be family activities like art exhibitions and movie nights.
Of significance, the Vans US Open of Surfing will be the number six spot on the 2014 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, making it a pivotal stop. The defending champion of last year’s Vans US Open for the Women’s division is also the current number one placeholder on the Women’s World Tour, Carissa Moore (21). Spectators have been watching the healthy rivalry between Sally Fitzgibbons and Carissa Moore rather closely.
“It’s great to be back in California, and I always love coming here,” comments Carissa. “The US Open has a strong history, and we have an exciting title race this year. Sally [Fitzgibbons] has been on fire the last few events, and it’s been a little while since our last contest in Fiji. I’m looking forward to putting the jersey back on. I have some good boards under my feet, and I hope we can put on a good show for everyone.”
The Men’s defending champion, Alejo Muniz (24) is also a strong contender at this year’s Vans US Open of Surfing. The youngster representing Brazil will be competing once again against world class athletes like: Kelly Slater, Nat Young, Jordy Smith, Dane Reynolds, and hometown kid, Brett Simpson.
Not only is the competition going to be fierce at the 2014 Vans US Open of Surfing, the fact that professional surfers are excited to be on the American leg of the ASP World Tour is also significant! American pride in athletics and surfing is on the rise, and it’s starting with the 2014 Vans US Open of Surfing. Kelly Slater and Coco Ho earnestly promoted the launch of U.S. leg of the ASP World Tour on NBC’s Today Show alongside Gabriel Medina, Julian Wilson, CJ Hobgood, Courtney Conlogue, and Greg Long.
