A Tesla crash test resulted in the highest possible rating for their Model S. The car received a five-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to CNN on August 21, 2013, the vehicle earned the highest score of any car ever.
Tesla is saying, essentially, that it got an A plus in NHTSA's crash tests. And it got the best A plus ever.
The company attributed the Tesla crash test performance to the fact that it is missing something most other cars have, a gasoline engine under the hood. Instead the front end of the car is designed to handle crashes like no other. The vehicle also outperformed on side impact testing as well.
The Tesla crash test also revealed that the new Model S is very resistant to rollovers. The company attributed that aspect to the location of the battery, which is mounted in such a way to give the car a very low center of gravity. To top it all off, the Tesla also excelled in the roof crush test. Apparently when an independent test was done, the roof was so strong, that it actually broke the testing machine.
