Two 15-year-old girls were charged with cruelty to animals after an online video showed the girls allegedly putting a cat into a microwave, according to Bangor Daily News on Monday.
South Portland, Maine police received multiple calls on Friday after the video appeared on Twitter.
A comment made by an individual on the South Portland police’s Facebook page said the video showed the girls laughing when they put the kitten in the microwave, closed the door and turned it on.
The girls have been identified, however their names will not be released as they are juveniles. They attend the same high school.
According to South Portland police Lt. Frank Clark, the cat in the video is showing no ill effects. The cat has been turned over to animal control, where the cat will be checked by a veterinarian.
The case has been forwarded to the Cumberland County district attorney’s office for review.
