A Laramie native, Starks has always been a fitness buff. He was a three-sport athlete at Laramie High School and has been working in the fitness industry for more than 14 years. He is certified as a personal trainer by the National Strength & Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is an NASN - Certified Sports Nutritionist. He was owner of Omni Personal Fitness Training in Denver and General Manager of Fitness 19 in Westminster, CO, for seven years before moving back to Laramie at the beginning of this year.
“Laramie is a small college town and can only support a couple of clubs” says Keith, “and opening a new location would have been a struggle for everyone, so we purchased an existing gym and are in the process of remodeling and re-energizing it.”
The former Kourt House Racquet and Fitness Center had been a fixture in Laramie for more than 20 years but had seen its best days. The 12,000 square foot facility is now being completely transformed inside and out.
Explains Keith, “We have replaced the free weights and circuit machines with new Life Fitness and Hammer Strength equipment, we have painted, removed the acoustic (popcorn) ceilings, converted a racquetball court into a new circuit room, added a Crossfit style gym which we call The Playground. We will be updating the locker rooms, cardio room, and group fitness room over the next few months.”
“We have a great group of members that has been here since the place opened in the 1970s and a lot of new members have joined along the way. I always ask for their input when it comes to the remodel. They all seem very pleased about the changes done so far and are excited about what is coming next!”
The vestiges of the Kourthouse are being replaced by a modern fitness facility under the leadership of a passionate owner.
“Who wouldn't want to work in a gym!?!” says Keith with a smile. “With personal and sometimes WORLD records being broken in the gym every day, and being surrounded by some of the most motivated and determined people? I enjoy just about everything about the fitness industry, but most of all I enjoy being around people who care about personal health and fitness as much as I do.”
