Matt Kass, who is one-half of the Modern Inventors with musical partner Josh Benus and who are performing at this year's SXSW on March 13, revealed the group's very modern electro dub pop version of Paul McCartney's “Every Night” got a compliment from the Beatle. You can hear their version on Soundcloud.
The cover was created for Philadelphia deejay Helen Leicht to play on WXPN-FM as a tribute to Paul McCartney's 70th birthday and became popular on the station. Their version eventually made it to McCartney, who emailed the group and said he was “chuffed” by their cover, Kass says. They'll be performing at 8 p.m. March 13 at the Tap Room. Their latest album, “Trains & Aeroplanes,” is available on Amazon.com and iTunes.
Also appearing at this year's conference is Paul McCartney guitarist Rusty Anderson, who will perform from 11:30 p.m. to 12:10 a.m. March 12 at Rowdy's Saloon with his group Rusty Anderson Afternoon. He will also discuss his music and guitar techniques in an interview with deejay Jody Denberg from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 13 at Austin Convention Center.
Beatle-related events have been a part of recent SXSWs. Last year's event featured the world premiere of the Beatles documentary “Good Ol' Freda,” which received a standing ovation from the crowd. The SXSW showing preceded a tour of film festivals prior to the film's release on DVD in December.
Also featured last year was a panel discussion titled “50 Years of the Beatles,” with Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli, singers Rodney Crowell, Emmylou Harris, Ron Sexsmith and Robyn Hitchcock, and MTV executive vice president Bill Flanagan, creator of the series “VH1 Storytellers,” which featured Ringo Starr for one episode.
In 2011, Yoko Ono was interviewed by Denberg and also performed a concert with her son Sean Ono Lennon.
