Swai recipes: 10 ways to cook the budget-friendly fish

 Swai fish is gaining in popularity, as budget-conscious cooks are drawn to its low price per pound. A newcomer to many local markets, swai fish fillets have a lot of home cooks scratching their heads. While most of us have go-to recipes for cooking familiar seafood favorites like tuna, salmon, or shrimp, we have no experience with swai.

That's why it seemed like a timely idea to collect the best swai fish recipes on the Internet, giving home cooks a sampling of the best available recipes for trying out the wallet-friendly fish for the first time. Some of these recipes call for basa, which is interchangeable with swai.

    It's catfish. Best thing to with it is wet the filets with a little water, then dredge them with the Louisiana style breading mix. Fry them in an iron skillet for a couple minutes on each side in some hot oil and that is it - good with Mississippi comeback sauce

    cooked it last eve in foil on the grill w lemon and a little butter. was awesome. had a crab like flavor. I HATE catfish and this tasted nothing like the mud suckers

    Tried this cousin of the catfish found in Northern California the other day just out of curiosity...Wow was it ever good....I highly recommend it, very affordable and it can be cooked so many different ways…my new favorite fish….yummmmmy

    If you mix up a seafood stuffing, Swai works wonderfully for fish pinwheels. I like to glaze them with Hoisin sauce afterwards & bake. Yum!

    I've been on the Dukan diet(high protein-low carb) the past 4 months and Swai is my favorite fish. No one mentions the microwave, which is the only way I've cooked it. A little lemon pepper, lightly covered 3-4 minutes(or until flaky). BTW, I've hit a plateau the past month, but down 35 lb. without being miserable.

    This is a rather bland but otherwise enjoyable fish that your kids may actually eat, breaded and deep fried,with traditional tartar sauce or a honey mustard jalapeno sauce rather pleasant

    What do you most of you folks consider a budget price for swai , i paid $9.99 for a 40 oz. bag of individually wrapped frozen fillets. 1st time for me.. i had to ask the young fella behind the fresh fish counter what swai were, He told me they are a type of cat fish which are farmed in Viet Nam and cook up like a cod or sole fillet..Have you personally tried them i asked.. NO, he said, but that is what management told me to say. He further said, i can break open the bag a sell you just a few to try because they are individually wrapped. So i whet with that.,actually, LATER.

    Steam it in a pie plate for 10 minutes or until the meat is firm. Heat up about 2-3 tablesppons of olive oil in a wok. Finely chop two cloves of garlic, some fresh jalepeno pepper, green onion (include the stalk and bulb), and two slices of ginger slightly crushed to release flavor. In a small bowl, pour about 2-3 tablespoons of light soy sauce (regular if you prefer). Reserve chopped garlic, jalepeno pepper and some ginger. Add green onions and remaining ginger to the soy sauce. When oil is hot (don't let it smoke too much), add the ginger, garlic and jalepeno and stir for about 30 seconds. Add the soy sauce mix and stir for about 1 minute. Pour onto the steamed fish and use a spoon to mix with the water in the plate and over the fish.
