Survey: Obamacare costs 1,000 western Michigan jobs, Land pulls ahead

In a report released late Thursday by Grand Valley State University says more than 1,000 jobs were lost in western Michigan alone because of the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as Obamacare. The report also says 49% of the companies interviewed have increased the share of healthcare costs their employees must pay to keep coverage. The report added fuel to the Terri Lynn Land senate campaign as another poll, released Friday by Rasmussen shows she is widening her lead over the Gary Peters.

The study by Leslie A. Muller, Paul Isely and Adelin Levin says companies are acting to protect their business’s viability in light of increased costs due to ACA. They conclude that economic growth has slowed by 0.1 to 0.2 percent because of ACA.

Hiring has suffered as 15% of the firms contacted are using temporary workers instead of hiring full time employees, 29% have reduced the number of hours given to hourly employees and 22% have reduced hiring altogether.

Terri Lynn Land, Republican candidate for the Senate seat being vacated by longtime incumbent Carl Levin, was quick to respond.

"The more we learn about Obamacare, the more reasons we have to repeal it,” Land said in an interview with WOOD-TV, “Now we are learning the havoc it is wreaking on our economy and the damage it's causing to our quality of health care.”

Meanwhile Land continued to pull ahead of likely democrat challenger Gary Peters of Detroit. Yesterday Rasmussen published a poll showing Land leading her opponent by two points. Although the lead is 37% to 35%, within the margin of error and showing nearly a third of voters have yet to align with either candidate, it is the third consecutive poll showing the once underdog Land now in the lead.
