With three Supreme Court justices robbed in the past several years, it’s as if being one of the ‘Supremes’ is like being a robber’s magnet.
In the latest incident of a justice of the high court being robbed, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer was visiting his vacation home in the Caribbean Island of Nevis with his wife and some family friends last week when the group was robbed by a robber with a machete.
The robbery was committed by a masked thief who made off with about a thousand dollars in cash from Breyer’s home. Unfortunately, according to the Nevis Police Department, there are no suspects or arrests yet regarding the Breyer robbery or other robberies that occurred at about the same time in the area.
Prior to the Breyer robbery last week, two other Supreme Court justices had been robbed in relatively recent times. Justice David Souter, who retired in 2009, received minor injuries when he was mugged by several young men while he was jobbing in 2004. Also, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who has been serving on the high court since she was appointed by former President Bill Clinton in 1993, was the victim of a purse-snatching as she was walking with her husband and daughter near the Kennedy Center. In the Ginsburg case, there were no injuries.
Justice Stephen Breyer was appointed to the United States’ Supreme Court in 1994 by Clinton and still serves as a liberal force in the court.
