Strong GTA V interest hinted at by GTA IV sales in July

The July 2013 NPD sales chart was released Thursday and included an interesting comment from NPD analyst Liam Callahan regarding interest in Grand Theft Auto V for the PS3 and Xbox 360 based on the performance of GTA IV.

"If the top software was ranked on an SKU basis, the following would have made the top 10 for July: 3DS Shin Megami Tensei IV; 3DS Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon; 360 Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition," Callahan revealed (via Venture Beat).

"It is unusual to see a software SKU that launched close to three years ago appear in the top 10, but clearly this is an indication that gamers who missed Grand Theft Auto IV are catching up before Grand Theft Auto V launches in September."

It also likely helped that Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition was easy to find at $20 or less. Regardless, this shows the selling power of the series which publisher Take Two Interactive predicts will generate 65 percent of its revenue for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2014. Some analysts are suggesting that GTA V could sell up to 20 million copies in its first six months of release.

Grand Theft Auto V is set for a worldwide Sept. 19 release on the PS3 and Xbox 360. Rockstar Games revealed the multiplayer component today, Grand Theft Auto Online.
