The man who rose to a household name after the semi-documentary film The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters has regained a World Record score.
Washington's Steve Wiebe is now back on top of the Donkey Kong Junior scoreboard, as Twin Galaxies has announced Steve's new mark of 1,190,400 points as the new official World Record.
Wiebe knocks off Enid, Oklahoma native Mark Kiehl to reclaim the record. Kiehl beat Wiebe to gain the record in October of last year, after Wiebe had taken the Donkey Kong Junior record from Ike Hall last spring. Hall, of course, made waves in the summer of 2008 by breaking the official record that had stood since 1982.
Major props to Steve. Naturally, the world now wonders if the original Donkey Kong is next, especially since Twin Galaxies revised the "live event only" rules for submissions on that title many months ago to open up competition from numerous new contenders all taking a shot at the crown on that classic game.
I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Wiebe last summer as I travelled from Denton, TX in a cross-country trip, ending up last in Los Angeles for the E3 Expo, where Steve played on live national television to take a shot at the DK World Record. He is a humble and well spoken guy who still cannot believe the attention he has gained in the world over a video game score.
As for Billy Mitchell? People always wish to bring him up, so let's clear it up. Bill is still the current Donkey Kong champion, but has not been the Donkey Kong Junior champion since August 2008 and currently sits in fourth place all-time on the game. The headlines out there need to read that Steve took this title from Mark Kiehl, who had taken it from Steve. Thank you.
Congrats Mr. Wiebe!

I'm a Billy Mitchell AND a Steve Wiebe fan. Congratulations to Steve for taking hold of the title - and thank you for clearing up the difference between the two records each man holds, and for what games.
So when is Scott Patterson going to set his next world record... you know, the one for pies?
And let me please clarify the Billy Mitchell fan comment above - I am a fan of his in the I-love-men-who-still-live-in-the-past sort of way. Steve Wiebe (as portrayed in Fistful and by you, Scott) is a man of great character - of which I admire.
The end!
I loved playing Donkey Kong---I wish there was an arcade around here that offered a wide variety of all the old classic games.
