While Congress and the news media focus on the national debate on firearms, the multi-pronged attack on the gun rights of the American people continues, often under the radar screen. The states now appear to be ground zero for the assault as some states approve draconian measures to deprive citizens of their Constitutional rights.
Missouri is the latest. A bill has been introduced in the legislature by Missouri Democrats that would not only outlaw certain guns but mandate that the state government confiscate them.
According to a report filed by Gateway Pundit, citizens in Missouri would have 90 days to turn in outlawed guns and large capacity magazines to boot. Failure to turn in the guns and magazines would be deemed a class C felony.
New York state has already passed into law the most restrictive gun control laws in the country, banning semiautomatic firearms and limiting the number of rounds a citizen can have in the magazine to seven.
California is set to pass its own set of restrictive measures that would surpass New York in their severity.
And in New Mexico, the state's House of Representatives has voted to close the so-called "gun show loophole" by forcing guns sold by private citizens to be registered and forcing their buyers to undergo background checks.
As previously reported such a law is designed to prevent citizens from having the freedom to sell, trade, or give their guns as gifts. Most citizens would simply forgo the trouble of getting permission from the government to sell something that they own. This cumbersome law is sure to have a chilling effect on private gun sales across the board, meaning that citizen-to-citizen gun sales or transfers of any type would be first subject to government approval.
Thus, "closing the gun show loophole" is designed to do nothing more than ban private gun sales, although such sales account for a tiny minority of firearms sales. Most vendors at gun shows are federally licensed dealers who are already required by law to do background checks.
New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, a Republican, has already stated that she would sign such a bill into law if passed by the legislature, proving once again that not all Republicans are on the side of gun owners and the Constitution.
All of these examples show that the fight to retain the unfettered right to self defense with firearms is nowhere near being won. Although Obama's proposals may have a hard time getting through Congress, the individual states are conducting their own assault on the gun rights of citizens. And in many states, gun rights activists are losing the battle.
Thus, civil disobedience may be the only recourse available to citizens who hold to the Constitution once it is all said and done. Many citizens from New York to California have declared that they have no intention of complying with any law that violates the clear statement of the Second Amendment, "...the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
