Leaders in many “red” politically conservative states are putting up strong resistance to the newly announced gun control regulations issued this past week by the White House. As reported today by ABC News, governors and legislators in some states are announcing that any of the gun regulations that violate the Second Amendment of the Constitution will not be enforced in their states.
Just this past week, President Obama issued 23 gun control executive orders he believes will reduce gun-related violence. The new regulations are in reaction to several recent schooting incidents, including those at the Sandy Hook School in Newtown, Conn. as well the movie theater shooting last summer in Aurora, Col.
Gov. Phil Bryant (R-MS) denounced the president's gun control executive orders and called on the Mississippi state legislature to enact legislation prohibiting enforcement of the new regulations in the state.
State House Speaker Phil Gunn backed the governor's call, stating. "We are here to assure Mississippians that we are going to continue to fight for their Second Amendment rights to bear arms, These are dangerous times, and people have a constitutional right to protect themselves and their property."
In Texas, State Representative Steve Toth announced he will be filing legislation to nullify the regulations in his state, called the “Firearms Protection Act.” The legislation would seek to ensure that “any federal law banning semi-automatic firearms or limiting the size of gun magazines unenforceable within the state's boundaries" and most notably "anyone trying to enforce a federal gun ban could face felony charges under the proposal.”
“We can no longer depend on the Federal Government and this Administration to uphold a Constitution that they no longer believe in, The liberties of the People of Texas and the sovereignty of our State are too important to just let the Federal Government take them away,” Toth wrote in a statement he released.
State legislators are moving in the same direction in Missouri. State Sen. Brian Munzlinger is filing a bill similar to the “Firearms Protection Act” in Texas to “keep far-reaching regulations from violating the constitutional rights of all Missourians.”
Additionally, sheriffs in Oregon and Kentucky have announced they will not enforce federal gun control regulations that are in violation of the Second Amendment.
These actions are part of a larger trend, a red-blue political war that is taking place in the United States where the growing political power grabs and constitutional violations coming from the implimentation of politicies from the far left from the federal government are being resisted by peaceful political means in the more conservative “red” leaning states. This column will continue to chronicle the red-blue political war as supporters of constitutionally protected liberty resist the efforts of the Obama Administration to impose a far left agenda on the population.
