St. Patrick's Day is the time we celebrate Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Although the day has come to be celebrated with parades and beer, Ireland's history and the story of Saint Patrick are much richer than that. This article will take a look at a few dolls which pay tribute to Ireland and Saint Patrick's Day and will continue in the upcoming article, "Irish Barbies, Past and Present."

Oddly enough, one of the mediums in which some of Ireland's culture and history are captured is in dolls, and dolls are often displayed as part of decorating for St. Patrick's Day. Doll clubs often have special parties and displays in honor of St. Patrick's Day. In the 1940s - 1960s, plastic Irish travel dolls were made by companies like the Duchess Doll Corp. Today many doll companies continue the tradition by regularly making Irish dolls to celebrate Ireland's culture, among them Madame Alexander and Mattel.

If you would like to see some Irish dolls on display, Nashville's Plantation Belles Doll Club is holding their annual St. Patrick's Day doll meeting this Thursday night at Shoney's in Bellevue.
