At the tender age of 13, I started on a journey. This journey consisted of exploring many different venues that exist in the worlds of the parapsychological, metaphysical and spiritual. In trying to find my own path in life, it took an incredible amount of effort to research each venue, not to mention years to complete before my very spiritual essence resonated with what it was supposed to connect with. Had I access to Walter D. Pullen’s book, ‘Evolution of the Spirit’, back then during those years of seeking, I dare say it would not have taken as long, because he has completely categorized them all so well in his rendering. Walter recently graciously consented to answer a few questions about his book and I invite you to read further to be enlightened from his wisdom:
Examiner: Your new book seems to be a encyclopedic compendium for the neophyte seeking Information on spirituality. What inspired you to write this extensive work?
Walter: ‘Evolution of the Spirit’ was inspired by my own spiritual Path. I’ve encountered a number of different approaches to spirituality and metaphysics, each of which offers its own benefits. There is so much out there these days that it’s hard for the beginner or even the more experienced seeker to keep track of it all and know where to begin or what to do next. I have endeavored to summarize and synthesize the different areas of spiritual progression, making ancient wisdom more accessible and understandable to the modern seeker. Beyond that I want each of us to be inspired to become more spiritual. By presenting the beautiful individual colors of spirituality, so to speak, hopefully we can see the larger and deeper ‘rainbow’ they compose together!
Examiner: Are there any planned sequels in the future to expound on specific topics located within the chapters of your current book?
Walter: Yes! Each chapter in ‘Evolution of the Spirit’ is about a different metaphysical topic, where each of those chapters could be expanded into its own book. For example, I’ve long been interested in astrology, having written the freeware astrology program Astrolog (http://www.astrolog.org) before writing this book. Once my next project is done (in a year or two) I’ll be able to share more details about it.
Examiner: What is your background in the arenas of metaphysics and parapsychology?
Walter: I was first awakened (or perhaps I should say reawakened) to occult studies in the 1980’s when the New Age movement starting becoming popular. Some areas I’ve appreciated for longer, such as astrology. Organizations that I resonate with which have help shaped my path include the Mystery School Astara (http://www.astara.org) that I’ve been a member of since 1990, the 11:11 Doorway (http://www.nvisible.com), and more recently I’ve been involved with the Morya Federation (http://www.moryafederation.net).
Examiner: Do you think that those who are seeking within the venues you write about should explore them all in order to find what resonates best with their own spirit?
Walter: Yes, to a certain degree. Think of spiritual growth like a university. There’s a breadth requirement, where one needs to take a certain number of classes in different areas in order to be well-rounded enough to graduate. At the same time there’s a depth requirement, where one eventually needs to select a major and develop an area of expertise. After you have explored to a certain extent, the areas you most enjoy and have talent in should reveal themselves. For example, one seeker might express as a healer, another as a meditation instructor, another as a UFO investigator, and a fourth some unique combination of multiple areas.
Examiner: In your opinion (and in general) are there any certain directions where currently the ‘pulse’ of those that seek are going?
Walter: Yes, people are awakening faster these days and to ever higher degrees. This is partly due to the more spiritual souls being born, such as the Indigo Children. In addition, seekers are increasingly expressing love, realizing their oneness with others, and uniting in groups. In spite of the seeming chaos and negativity that’s often focused on by the media, our world is a lot more connected than ever before, and that allows us to grow in areas and do things that haven’t been possible until now.
Examiner: What advice would you give to those first launching out on this quest?
Walter: Balance is one of the most important things to maintain when embarking upon a spiritual path. Most ways we have problems with respect to spirituality (and in other areas of our lives for that matter, such as physical health) are the result of being out of balance of too extreme in one direction or another. For example: take spiritual growth seriously, but don’t forget to rest and have fun. Develop your own talents, but realize spirituality isn’t a race or competition. Beware of charlatans and cults that masquerade as spiritual teachers, but don’t be so suspicious that you miss out on opportunities for fellowship. Honor the ancient wisdom, but realize what was true before isn’t necessarily right today. Finally, realize there’s a balance between balance and not being balanced, if that makes sense! Ultimately your path is your own, and you should follow your heart no matter what others may say.
I was most impressed with Walter’s last thought about following your own heart, as I have also, in kind, always believed thusly for as long as I can remember.
