Somer Thompson killer is finally sentenced, but not to death

It’s been two years since the murdered body of little Somer Thompson was found in a landfill in south Georgia.  Her murderer was captured and has been living on Florida’s taxpayer’s money in jail.  Now he’s going to spend the rest of his life in prison (no chance of parole see story here from USA Today).

The story of this horrific crime was covered by this reporter back in 2009 and 2010.  Somer was in second grade and lived in Orange Park (a suburb of Jacksonville, FL).  Somer and her twin brother Samuel were coming home from school one day when she got separated from him.  Sommer went to pet an animal in front of an unknown house, as she normally did, but this time she was snatched away out from anyone’s view.

Jarred Harrell, now 26 years old, is getting ready to serve his “life” sentence in a federal penitentiary.  Even though a plea-bargain agreement has been set; is the punishment befitting the crime?  From an AP article, here is a description of how workers found little Somer’s body: “On a hunch, they tailed nine garbage trucks from Somer's neighborhood to the landfill and picked through the trash as each rig spilled its load.  They sorted through more than 225 tons of garbage before they spotted her legs sticking out of the garbage.”

So why bring up the subject again?  Because this is updated local news and the question is: Why has it taken so long for the court systems to settle the case?  What would happen if this were Biblical times and there is no “reasonable doubt” that a crime had been committed?  If you take a look at the Video to the left of this column, you’ll see that Somer’s mother (Diena Thompson) is finally able to get some closure to her daughter’s horrible demise along with some comfort for the other members of her family.  Finally it’s a time for little Somer Thompson to RIP.

As you look at a ‘Trash Collection Truck”, it’s so hard to imagine that a precious little child was abducted, raped, beaten and then disposed of in this manner – like trash.  This was someone’s child, not trash.  Somer Thompson was a gift from God that was taken away by a sexual predator.

But why do the courts take so long for a conviction?  And is it right for the courts to keep an admitted murdered alive on tax-payers dollars - “Deal Or No Deal?”  In these last days – we need to be cautious and aware NOT to let our guards down concerning our children.  Times are not like they use to be, a long time ago, when you could trust almost everybody.
