Who says you have to be linear in your pursuits for the perfect entrepreneurial endeavors. For professional speaker and business owner Melissa Turner her talents not only deal with owning Mainstream Services, Inc. but also her dynamic speaking career as a Corporate America coach. She is this week's Small Business Spotlight participant.
When did you start your business and why did you start your business? Mainstream Services Inc., started in 2007 to help healthcare providers and non-providers receive reimbursements for services provided to their patients allowing them to focus solely on patient care. But owner Melissa Turner saw something different for herself and eventually took her passion for career advancement and became a professional speaker.
What does your business offer and what is your target market? Mainstream Services, Inc. offers full practice management for health care offices as well as some a la carte services. The companies target market are behavioral health, diagnostic imaging, pediatric and general practice providers. For her speaking engagements, Turner, also a published author, targets individuals who are already in Corporate America but are looking to advance or change careers. She also speaks to individuals seeking to enter into Corporate America.
How is your business different from others in your industry? Both of Turner's businesses are different. For Mainstream, the company's focus is on correctly obtaining the reimbursements for the providers office while fostering good will with the patients to help them navigate the services billed and what was reimbursed by their insurance carrier. For her speaking career her approach makes her different. She encourages her clients to do a tough self-evaluation before actually determining if a "glass ceiling" has been reached. This approach general steps on more than a few toes but it is intended too. There's a lot of truth behind the phrase "be careful of what you ask for because you just might get it."
How are you meeting the needs of your clients in today’s economy? Regardless of which company she is running she is meeting the needs of her clients in today's economy by being realistic with what is really needed and provided the best quality of services for them.
Who are your competitors, if any? Simple ... no company is a competitor in my mind because we all have unique services or products that we offer clients that make us the preferred, go to company.
Why is your business model important to you and your clients? Turner prides herself on a business model, for both companies, that is based on integrity and authenticity. Whether it’s the world of medical compliance and protected health information or corporate maneuvering a strong base is priceless, her principles are the foundation of her success.
How do you market and advertise your business? Social media is king and having an online presence is important but Turner also uses direct mailers and is always open to new avenues of telling the masses about both of her companies. Turner has social media pages for both Mainstream and herself.
Where do you see your business in the next 2-5 years? "In 2-5 years I expect both my medical billing and consulting company as well as my speaking/authoring career to continue to grow and continue to help people in meaningful ways. If what we see already for 2014 is any indication, we are on the right path."
What advice do you have for other small business owners? The advice I have for other small business owners is to stay humble and stay the course. There will be a lot of tough days and obstacles but it will all be worth the hard work and effort in the end.
