Skyscraper melting cars: The Walkie Talkie tower in England is not unlike a massive magnifying glass now, concentrating the sun’s reflected rays into a powerful sunbeam (a "scorcher") that threatens to melt cars and even harm passerby should they stay in the ray of heat too long, UPI shares this Tuesday, Sept. 3. The giant glass skyscraper, found in the City of London, has been under construction for some time in the financial district, but may soon have its new nickname stick: rather than the Walkie Talkie building, the car-melter is being called “Walkie Scorchie.”
While a skyscraper melting cars may sound impossible in itself, the damage the Walkie Talkie tower of London has caused is all too real. At certain times in the day, the sun’s rays that reflect from the surface of the building have been reported to quite literally burn objects below that are caught in the white-hot path of the makeshift magnifying glass’ ray. Several parking spots in a street low especially are in danger, and have been made unavailable to people following reports of melted cars and bicycles.
Due to the building’s unique construction, the skyscraper curves much like that of a concave mirror, reflecting an intense, bright, and focused beam down unto the street below when the sunlight hits the glass just right (for a full two hours during some summer weeks).
The skyscraper melting cars is no joke: due to the extreme heat and light, cracked tiles, burnt carpeting, scorched paint, and bent metal on parked cars have been some of the results of the Walkie Talkie tower’s powerful sunbeam.
One nearby business owner was shocked to find that his Jaguar XJ was sitting in a parking spot for less than an hour; when he returned from a meeting, its panels were severely twisted, and the plastic inside the car had quite literally melted away.
“They’re going to have to think of something," he said. "I’m gutted. How can they let this continue?”
While the building’s owners were forced to pay repairs for the car, an investigation by construction and other officials are working to find a solution to possibly weaken the power of the sunbeam, whether by removing certain glass panels on the skyscraper, covering them, or devising some other resolution.
