In its most recent edition that hit homes on March 19, “TV Guide” ran a feature story and named the nastiest television villains of all time. Simon Cowell from “American Idol” and “The X Factor” and the Governor, played by David Morrissey, from “The Walking Dead” both landed on the new list. “The devil made them do it, and damned if we don’t adore them for it,” writers Bruce Fretts and Matt Rouch said. “TV villains often get the best lines and have the most fun. That’s why they’re characters we love to hate.”
“TV Guide” listed Simon Cowell as its #10 pick for meanest villain. “Roll over, Kelly Clarkson. The sharp-tongued British judge is arguably the biggest star “Idol” has ever produced. Since he’s been gone, the show has lacked a certain, shall we say, X Factor,” Fretts and Rouch wrote. During his reign on “American Idol,” Simon was known for his nasty zingers and harsh comments towards the contestants. Below are a few of his most memorable ones.
- “I won’t remember you in 15 minutes.”
- “It was like taking a musical sleeping pill.”
- “You murdered that song, but that wasn’t manslaughter. That was first degree.”
- “Years ago I sat on two cats and that’s what it sounded like. It was painful.”
- “You’re like a mouse trying to be an elephant.”
- "You’re like a singing candle. You just stand there and melt.”
Cowell left “American Idol” in 2010 to bring “The X Factor” to the United States. He's mellowed a bit since making the move, but he can still zing with the best of them. He is active on Twitter and talked about his greatest success by saying on Tuesday, “One Direction continues to amaze me. Hard workers but still the nicest guys you could hope to work with.” He’s been disappointed by so-so ratings for “The X Factor” and promises changes for 2013. Judges Britney Spears and L.A. Reid will not return and new judges have not yet been named. Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, John Mayer and Diddy have been mentioned in the media as possible replacements. Auditions are currently underway across the country.
The Governor is also a top villain, according to “TV Guide.” He first appeared on “The Walking Dead” during the third episode of season three. He rules Woodbury like Jim Jones and has very disturbing character traits. At one point, he kept his own daughter, an infected “walker,” locked in a closet and on a chain. Played by David Morrissey, the Governor has the potential to become an even bigger villain, especially now that he’s captured Andrea and fastened her to a medical chair in his chamber of horrors.
When asked about the Governor, producer Glen Mazarra described the villain as a “narcissist who sees himself as the future savior of civilization, and is willing to resort to the most extreme measures to achieve his ultimate goal.”
“The Walking Dead” airs at 9 p.m. EST on Sunday nights on AMC. With only two episodes remaining, the Governor’s ultimate fate in season three is up in the air. In the meantime, AMC is set to air a marathon of past episodes. All 33 shows will be shown, beginning at 8 p.m. EST on Monday, March 25.
