Selena Gomez spent two weeks in rehab in January to treat an addiction to alcohol, pot and the prescription sleep medication Ambien, TMZ reported.
Gomez's camp blamed Selena's drug and alcohol addiction on her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, who was recently arrested for DUI. Sources said Bieber was a bad influence on Gomez and exposed her to his chaotic, drug-addled lifestyle.
Selena is reportedly doing better now and is not getting therapy. Gomez was treated at Dawn at the Meadows facility in Arizona, a rehab center that treats 18- to 26-year-olds for substance dependence and mental-health issues.
In January 2013, singer Ke$ha also went to rehab, to treat her longtime anorexia and bulimia. Like Gomez, Kesha denied rumors of drug and alcohol addiction.
In December 2013, Selena abruptly canceled the Asian and Australian legs of her tour. In a statement, Gomez said she needed to take care of herself, but did not elaborate further.
"It has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be," she said.
The news fueled rumors that Gomez was taking time off from her tour because of a nervous breakdown, but her camp denied those reports. "Selena is not having a breakdown," said a source. "She wants to be the healthiest that she can be and this means taking a little break. But she is fine. She is OK."
Meanwhile, rumors are swirling that Gomez sought therapy in rehab to deal with her recent break-up from Justin Bieber. Sources claim Selena was emotionally distraught by the breakup and needed time to heal.
Gomez, 21, was reportedly diagnosed with lupus several years ago. Lupus is a mysterious autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks normal, healthy tissue.
Symptoms include joint pain, facial swelling, fatigue, inflammation and headaches. It's unclear what exactly causes lupus, and there is no cure, but eating well and getting lots of rest is crucial.
