Selena Gomez left rehab four weeks early, against the advice of medical professionals, TMZ reported.
Sources said Gomez checked into a six-week rehab program on Jan. 1 to treat her problems with alcohol, marijuana and the prescription sleep drug Ambien.
Selena was being treated at Dawn at the Meadows facility in Arizona, a rehab center that treats 18- to 26-year-olds for substance dependence and mental-health issues.
While her reps denied Gomez was addicted to drugs or alcohol, sources said she had grown dependent on pot, Ambien and booze and was heart-broken after her break-up from Justin Bieber.
Selena's camp blamed Justin for being a "bad influence," but Bieber insiders said Gomez is a heavy drinker and pot smoker who often gets wasted at parties, and she has no one to blame but herself.
Gomez was supposed to stay in rehab until the second week of February, but left just two weeks into treatment to promote her new movie, "Rudderless," at the Sundance Film Festival. She was supposed to return to rehab after Sundance, but decided against it.
Meanwhile, Selena's camp deny these reports. "She knew how long the program was," a source told EntertainmentWise. "You can leave anytime you want. There was always plans to go to Sundance even when she went in.
It wasn’t like she left early. Those dates for Sundance were always in the books. When she finished Sundance, she felt she was ready to go back to LA. It was no big deal. Again, she didn’t go in for substance abuse, so she felt she took some time she needed away from L.A. and was ready to go back to L.A .after Sundance."
In December 2013, Selena abruptly canceled the Asian and Australian legs of her tour. In a statement, Gomez said she needed to take care of herself, but did not elaborate further.
"It has become clear to me and those close to me that after many years putting my work first, I need to spend some time on myself in order to be the best person I can be," she said.
The news fueled rumors that Gomez was taking time off from her tour because of a nervous breakdown, but her camp denied those reports. "Selena is not having a breakdown," said a source. "She wants to be the healthiest that she can be and this means taking a little break. But she is fine. She is OK."
Gomez, 21, was diagnosed with lupus several years ago. Lupus is a mysterious autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks normal, healthy tissue.
Symptoms include joint pain, facial swelling, fatigue, inflammation and headaches. It's unclear what exactly causes lupus, and there is no cure, but eating well and getting lots of rest is crucial.
Other celebrities with lupus include entertainer Nick Cannon, singers Lady Gaga and Toni Braxton, and actresses Kristen Johnston and Anna Gunn.
