Reading, writing, arithmetic - and weight loss? A diet initiative that started with just a few people in a school district turned into an impressive weight loss revolution as more than 200 Brainerd school employees and family members lost an average of 9.39 pounds in just 17 days, reported the Brainerd Dispatch on Feb. 6.

"It was one of those situations where we didn’t plan or strategize the momentum. We just had to grab it and run with it,” said Aimee Jambor, Brainerd School District nurse and head of the diet plan.

The weight loss plan that she chose: Dr. Mike Moreno's "The 17 Day Diet: A Doctor's Plan Designed for Rapid Results" (click for details).

Reflecting on the results, Aimee termed it "the right time of year, the right people and the right program. It just happened, evolved. It was one of best things we could have done."

The diet program began when three school employees asked her for weight loss tips. She decided to offer the plan that she chose to the entire staff.

“People were looking for something that worked. Everyone had tried 100 diets before,” said Chris Ramey, an attendance secretary at Forestview Middle School.

The dieters followed these guidelines, which vary in different cycles during the 17 days of the plan:

  • No alcohol, soda or sweets, and very few carbohydrates.
  • Participants ate lean protein (chicken, eggs, fish), fruits low in sugar (avoid pineapple, watermelon and bananas), vegetables, a small amount of grains and plenty of water.
  • For those who never exercised, 17 minutes a day is recommended.

What made a difference? Support and a diet that includes unlimited amounts of certain food groups, as well as variety in different phases. Participants report benefits ranging from extreme weight loss to reduced cholesterol, an end to insomnia and a boost in energy.

During the 17 days of the diet, participants lost 3.5 to 20 pounds, averaging more than nine pounds.

“There’s a huge momentum to take on a healthier lifestyle,” Aimee concluded. “That’s the most important thing.”

In addition to the original "17-Day Diet," Dr. Moreno recently concocted a weight loss plan that includes short-term cleansing liquid cycles: "The 17 Day Diet Breakthrough Edition."

We interviewed him about the "breakthrough" plan, and he explained that in addition to the semi-fasting day, it also includes new recipes to supplement his cookbook "The 17 Day Diet Cookbook: 80 All New Recipes for Healthy Weight Loss." Read our exclusive interview with Dr. Moreno by clicking here.
