SC mom calls cops on 15-yr-old son for watching porn on TV

A 15-year-old boy in South Carolina was not arrested after his mom called 911 and got local law enforcement involved in a situation that is usually handled within the home -- the secretive perusal of porn by teenagers. According to a Huffington Post report on Aug. 7, the South Carolina mom is making headlines after calling the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office to make a complaint that her teen son was watching pornography on the living room television.

The Sheriff's Office said they were called to the residence on Tuesday afternoon to take the report. "She stated that when she entered the residence, her 15-year-old son was in his bedroom," the report stated. "[Her] daughter turned on the TV and porn was on."

After she ushered her 2-year-old out of the room she "immediately" turned off the television and called the police. The report goes on to say that the mother told the responding officer that she had a few problems with her teen son's behavior of late.

"[The mom] requested that a report be done to document... her son's behavior and due to her daughter being exposed to porn."

But if the upset mother thought she was going to see her 15-year-old son arrested, she was mistaken. And there was a simple explanation for the non-action taken. Nothing illegal had occurred.

"I don’t know of any South Carolina law that was broken," Lt. Kevin Bobo told HuffPost on Thursday. He said it was the first time such a 911 call had ever been fielded, noting that it was "unusual" for a parent to call the cops to report their teenager looking at porn.

And by "unusual," the good lieutenant most likely was making a comment on the mother's behavior, not the son's.

The mother was not to be denied her report, though. She even completed a "voluntary statement" to the sheriff's deputy, according to the police report. All of which undoubtedly thoroughly embarrassed the 15-year-old and, in some way, might shame him into never watching adult movies again. Maybe. Or, even more likely, he won't ever again watch porn on the living room television.

Still, the proper way to have handled the matter would have been to have a private discussion with the teen (see video above), set down firm boundaries and guidelines on what is appropriate -- and inappropriate -- to view in the household, especially considering that there is a very young family member in the house as well. Trying to embarrass and shame the teen and document the daughter's "exposure" to porn, something a 2-year-old will not cognitively process as wrong, immoral, or inappropriate (and likely forget within a few minutes or hours) if the moment is not belabored and reinforced with drama and made memorable, only begets resentment and will likely prove counterproductive. Calling 911 and bringing in the police was an over-reaction that could potentially scar a sensitive person for life or simply present the parent as an authority figure without credibility. Insisting that a report be filed when the officer would not make an arrest was a bit heavy-handed and only accentuated an ineffectual attempt at trying to discipline natural curiosity and sexual exploration, normal behaviors by most standards.

In short, parenting is a difficult process. Making reactionary and ridiculous decisions that do nothing to solve behavioral issues in children and teens only serve to exacerbate the problems, not provide meaningful or helpful answers.
