It has been a tough year for Toyota in many ways, including the death of founder EijiToyoda at the age of 100 in September ( to the more than $1.6 billion it has had to cough up to settle lawsuits over unintended vehicle acceleration and braking problems here in the US.

Now those same problems have come back to haunt them just one year later after the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Commerce and Industry issued a mandatory recall of over 400,000 Toyota and Lexus cars on Christmas Eve.

According to Reuters (which first reported the recall), Toyota must now install a brake override system in all vehicles from model years 2005 through 2011 sold in Saudi Arabia. In addition government regulators there have ordered the Japanese carmaker to begin “an awareness campaign” that will instruct drivers on how it operates, as well as what drivers need to do if unintended acceleration occurs.
