On Aug. 23, 2013, the San Diego City Council voted to accept the resignation of Mayor Bob Filner, according to KABC 7.
After the 7 to 0 vote, it was determined that Todd Gloria, the Democratic City Council President, will become acting mayor until a special election is held 90 days after Filner steps down on Aug. 30.
In his resignation, Filner, 70, apologized for partially “causing all this” and said the “city should not have been put through this…”
According to KABC, 16 women have come forward to accuse the mayor of sexual harassment. Although he has apologized for failing to respect women, he denies sexually harassing anyone.
Filner’s former communication’s director, Irene McCormack Jackson, has filed a lawsuit against the mayor and was the first woman to go public to accuse the politician of inappropriate behavior.
KABC reports Filner was slated to return to work Monday after attending therapy, but instead was in mediation.
