In ways, UK singer Sam Smith has proved that one’s sexuality does not matter when it comes to obtaining dreams and breaking barriers. The “Stay With Me” singer has taken the music world by storm without much attention being brought to his sexuality. At first, the 22-year-old singer kept quiet about being gay because he did fear how he would or would not be accepted. In an interview with the Digital Spy published Tuesday, Smith opened up about coming out.

In the interview, he admitted to being a bit apprehensive about coming out publicly as gay, but was proud that people really didn’t seem to care that much. He told Digital Spy, “Equality is so far from where it should be, so I was worried. I didn’t give the public enough credit. We were really panicky about it, but then as soon as we did it, I am just so proud of how people haven’t reacted. People really just don’t give a s**t.”

He labeled his continued success after discussing his sexuality as progress and a step forward and although he is very open about whom he is Smith maintains that he does not want to make his sexuality a focus of everything he does in his young career. He understands and recognizes that he is an inspiration to many, but music has really become his primary emphasis.

He said, “It’s because I’m not trying to be a spokesperson. It sounds awful of me, but I’m really just trying to live my life and write music about it. That’s what I do. I’m not trying to heal the world. From a young age I’ve always been like this, so it’s been normal. My family and friends have made it feel normal and I’m not going to stop that now.”
