S.C. ‘First Husband’ Capt. Michael Haley deploys to Afghanistan

As a National Guard soldier, Michael Haley always knew that someday he might deploy on an overseas assignment. That “someday” is here.

Capt. Michael Haley’s S. C. National Guard unit said their tearful goodbyes yesterday at Fort Jackson, just outside of Columbia. Michael is the husband of S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley (R).

As many of the National Guard units have done in the last several years, Haley’s unit will spend its yearlong mission assisting Afghan farmers. Indiana and Illinois National Guard units have had a great impact on local Afghan farming practices.

Haley’s 3/49th Agribusiness Development Team be based in Helmand Province, long known as one of the largest opium-growing regions in the world.

Helmand Province is also home to the U.S. Marine’s massive Camp Leatherneck and the British forces’ Camp Bastion which came under attack by a suicide car-bomber last March.

South Carolina’s “First Husband” joined the National Guard in 2006 as an officer. This is his first overseas deployment.

Examiner’s Note: Every combat deployment hits close to home for someone. Capt. Haley’s deployment hits close to home for nearly 5 million South Carolinians. “Have a safe deployment, Capt. Haley and team. We’ll leave the lights on for y’all”.
