The website Nintendo.com has confirmed the release of a new title on the Nintendo 3DS. That game is “Rune Factory 4,” and it was released on October 1, 2013. This game is the latest in the “Rune Factory” franchise, which has spawned six titles, two on consoles and four (now that this title has released) on handhelds.
The “Rune Factory” franchise was originally a spinoff of the “Harvest Moon” franchise. It combines the farming and social aspects of “Harvest Moon” with dungeon crawling RPG aspects, similar to games like “Diablo” or “Torchlight” (although not nearly as loot-driven as those titles are). This unconventional combination ended up being quite popular, considering how many sequels the game has received. The games are set in a fantasy setting, unlike the relatively realistic settings of normal “Harvest Moon” titles.
All the normal “Harvest Moon” elements are in these games- raising crops, building a farm, making friends, getting married and having children. But these elements are supplemented with the ability to fight monsters and level up the player’s skills. For instance, using the sickle a lot will level up the player’s skill with it, which will increase his/her stats and will allow the player to use the sickle at a lower stamina cost.
“Rune Factory 4” has all the same elements from the previous games, but does bring some new things to the table. For instance, this will be the first “Rune Factory” to allow the player to choose a female protagonist. Also, some bosses that are defeated in this title will become new villagers, and potential marriage candidates.
