Ron Paul: wrong for atheists, wrong for secular America

Secular America should reject Ron Paul because Ron Paul rejects the separation of church and state and other cherished secular values.

Ron Paul is bad news for atheists and bad news for secular America. Paul is a deeply flawed presidential candidate that threatens the secular foundation of the United States. While there are ample reasons to oppose Paul, freethinkers, atheists and anyone who wants to preserve a secular America should be particularly troubled by a potential Paul presidency.

As the GOP presidential campaign heats up in Iowa, secular Americans vulnerable to seduction by Paul and his supporters should be aware of the problematic Paul presidential bid.

Ron Paul - Christian extremist

Ron Paul does not believe in the separation between church and state. In The War on Religion, Paul writes:

The notion of a rigid separation between church and state has no basis in either the text of the Constitution or the writings of our Founding Fathers.

Paul’s claim that there is no separation between church and state is false, and dangerous. The deeply mistaken, but often made claim by Christian extremists that the constitutionally guaranteed separation between church and state is some sort of left wing fiction is a profoundly pernicious fallacy, a fallacy to which Paul subscribes:

Through perverse court decisions and years of cultural indoctrination, the elitist, secular Left has managed to convince many in our nation that religion must be driven from public view. The justification is always that someone, somewhere, might possibly be offended or feel uncomfortable living in the midst of a largely Christian society, so all must yield to the fragile sensibilities of the few. The ultimate goal of the anti-religious elites is to transform America into a completely secular nation, a nation that is legally and culturally biased against Christianity. — Ron Paul.

Paul is a conservative Christian associated with the controversial and dangerous Dominionist movement. Paul believes there is a war on Christian America being waged by what he has characterized as “the elitist secular left.” Paul believes that:

The Founding Fathers envisioned a robustly Christian... America, with churches serving as vital institutions that would eclipse the state in importance. — Ron Paul
Ron Paul is a dangerous Christian extremist - but Paul and his supporters don’t want secular Americans to know this. Only last week Paul was bragging on his website that he had received the endorsement of a particularly nasty Christian extremist that advocates the death penalty for gays.

The Paul campaign clearly welcomed the endorsement calling Kayser an “eminent pastor.” Ron Paul’s Iowa Chairman, Drew Ivers, commended Kayser’s view of Paul’s approach to government, saying:
“We welcome Rev. Kayser’s endorsement and the enlightening statements he makes on how Ron Paul’s approach to government is consistent with Christian beliefs.”

However, despite the fact that the Paul campaign actively courted Kayser’s endorsement, after the main stream media began reporting on Kayser’s extreme views, the Paul campaign scrubbed the announcement of Kayser’s endorsement from their website, in the hopes of deceiving the American public about Paul’s radical and dangerous Christian extremism.

The reasons to oppose Paul are endless. Paul is haunted by a past filled with racism, antisemitism and homophobia. Paul is opposed to federal civil rights legislation, and believes states have the right to mandate school prayer and deprive women of the right to reproductive health care.

While Paul and his supporters would ask secular Americans to believe Paul is different from other Republican Christian extremists running for the GOP presidential nomination, he is not. And like any other Christian extremist, Ron Paul is wrong for America.
