Rocky Point fire: Abandoned houses leveled in blazing fire in Warwick Neck

A massive fire on the grounds near the old Rocky Point Amusement Park in Warwick Neck broke out shortly after noon on Saturday, March 15, 2014.

Abandoned houses near the Burnett Street gate caught fire and at least six fire trucks responded to the blaze in Warwick Neck. The smoke traveled as far as Palmer Avenue with flame blazing high above nearby homes. The Opinionated Nation reports that the heat from the fire could be felt from several houses away as smoke quickly filled the neighborhood.

Crowds gathered to watch the firefighters fight the blaze that quickly spread in the wooded area. It is not known at this time how the fire started or if anyone was inside the abandoned homes.

There are more than a dozen abandoned homes in the area that borders a walking path leading to the beach and the now defunct Rocky Point Amusement Park.

Residents who use the path have seen people in and out of the abandoned homes over the past two years and suspect perhaps someone left a burning cigarette inside, although that has not been confirmed.

Police on the scene blocked people from driving down to the area, but onlookers in the neighborhood crowded at the corner of Ogden and Burnett Street for a closer view.

By 12:55 p.m. the fire was under control with just a small amount of smoke coming from the scene. It is still not known if there were more than two abandoned houses leveled in the fire.

This post will be updated when more information is available from local authorities.
