On June 30th Jackie Willis, of Entertainment Tonight News, said “Robert Downey Jr.’s son Indio was arrested in West Hollywood, Calif. On Sunday afternoon for cocaine possession, ….” The article in its entirety, 'Robert Downey Jr.'s Son Arrested For Drug Possession', can be read on etonline.com. Some say that drug addiction is genetic. They believe that certain people are predisposed to addiction. The truth is more complex.

First off, people use drugs to deal with their emotions. If they are experiencing an emotion that is negative to them and causes them emotional pain, they use the drug to change the way that they feel. They make themselves feel better by introducing the drug into their body. It becomes a coping mechanism.

The fact that drug use tends to run in families does not point to a genetic factor, but rather a learned behavior. Sometimes parents teach their children how to deal with their emotions. If mom and dad do not deal with their emotions in a healthy way, the child or children can pick up on that. The parents may not use drugs to escape negative feelings, but if they do not deal with their emotions and are always trying to escape them, the child can learn this. If presented with the opportunity to use drugs to escape their own negative emotions they will have a higher chance of becoming an addict, because they have not been given the proper tools to process negative feelings.

In a culture that wants to run away from how they feel, it should not be surprising that their children want to do the same thing.
